What to visit in Dorgali

The Experiences

There are few places in Sardinia that offer such a broad array of tourism opportunities as Dorgali. These range from stunning natural sites on the coast or in the mountains to food, wine and folklore, and cultural activities offered by the region’s museums and exhibition venues. During your excursions you can admire Dorgali’s wonderful arts and crafts in various fields, including exquisite filigree objects made by master goldsmiths. With the Mariposa as your base, it’s easy to explore the best the town and its area have to offer.

What do you want from your holiday?

Relaxation and beach

From the Mariposa it’s easy to reach all the beaches on the Gulf of Orosei by land or by sea. Unmissable beaches for your stay are the coves to the south of Cala Gonone, which are accessible by sea with the ferries and dinghies that depart daily from the tourist port.
If you’re an expert, you may want to hire an inflatable dinghy, leaving you free to decide how long to spend at each. The most attractive beaches include Cala Luna, Mariolu and Goloritzè, but during your stay you’ll realise that every inch of the coast is unique and special.
Meanwhile, you can get to the beaches of Cartoe and Osalla in about 10 minutes by car.

These are particularly recommended if you prefer fine sandy beaches. If you're looking for fabulous beaches accessible by car, Cala Fuili and Bidderosa are definitely worth a visit. Walking and nature

If you want something more than sea and sand on your holiday in Sardinia, the Dorgali area offers a variety of natural spaces and geology, which can be explored on walks and hikes at every level of difficulty.
The mule tracks that criss-cross the Supramonte from sea to mountains are ancient drovers’ routes, today trodden by visitors seeking a unique experience of breathtaking views and rugged, unspoilt landscapes. Some of the natural sites have become more tourism-oriented, with tour groups accompanied by guides. This does not detract from the experience: thanks to the expertise of the guides you can combine your activities with learning about the history and geology of these mountains, making your trip even more satisfying.

The most popular destinations include the Gorropu canyon, the Tiscali sinkhole and the cuiles, ancient sheep pens usually located in strategic spots with huge views of the valleys. For cave enthusiasts, Ispinigoli is a must, or you can take a boat trip to the Bue Marino cave.

Extreme exploring

Over the years Cala Gonone and Dorgali have become a mecca for lovers of rock climbing and diving. Climbing routes are scattered throughout the area, and easily accessible from the Mariposa.
Among Europe’s most beautiful and sought-after experiences is the ascent of Punta Caroddi, the rock pinnacle overlooking Cala Goloritzè in the Baunei area. Meanwhile, the underwater world of the Gulf of Orosei offers fascinating explorations of caves or shipwrecks on the sea bed, teeming with fish. We work with the area’s best instructors, who are available to teach you about diving, even if it’s your first time.

Culture and tradition

A visit to the aquarium in Cala Gonone is a great addition to a boat trip in the Gulf of Orosei. Also worth a visit is the museum dedicated to the artist Salvatore Fancello and his work. History lovers can enrich their experience with a visit to the Dorgali Archaeological Museum, and if you’re interested in the ethnography of the region, we highly recommend the S’Abba Frisca Museum, where nature and culture blend perfectly. Religious events include the festivities for the Madonna dell’Assunta in the week of 15 August, where you can admire the elaborate traditional costume of Dorgali, and the feast of Madonna del Mare, with its unique boat procession, which takes place in July.

Food, wine and handcrafts

Lovers of good food and wine will definitely appreciate Dorgali’s history of farming and herding.
Traditions that are passed down through the centuries and which have allowed the island to excel in the production of cheeses, wines and olive oil. In the area’s markets and shops you’ll find plenty of local products to enjoy, either during your trip or to take home as gifts.
Cantina Dorgali and other producers organise food and wine tours and tasting sessions, even held among the rows of vines. The main grape variety here is Cannonau, but there are also excellent Vermentinis produced in the more granitic areas. Honeys, jams and baked goods complete a picture of unique flavours you’ll be enchanted to discover. And in the village streets you can buy wonderful hand-crafted items, particularly gold filigree, ceramics, leather, wrought iron and wood.
Trades that are handed down through the generations and still survive today, thanks to the quality of the work and an increasingly globalised market; a wonderful treat for you and a very special souvenir of your holiday.
